Active NZ is a population survey project within Sport NZ's ongoing research programme into New Zealanders' participation in sport and physical recreation activities. This is the fourth time Sport NZ has carried out a nationwide participation survey. However, it is the first time since 2011 that young people’s participation has been included, and the very first time young people and adults have been surveyed together.

The objectives of the surveys are: 1) to collect information on the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘where’ young people and adults participate; 2) identify and describe links between participation (and non-participation) and other influential factors: the ‘why’ people and ‘why not’ people participate; 3) measure the quality of participation and the contribution participation makes to individual’s health and wellbeing outcomes; and 4) understand the value placed on participation by people in New Zealand.
