The main objective of the Fire Knowledge and Communications Survey is to provide an updated measure of public fire safety knowledge and behaviour. The study has been updated annually since 1999 in order to track movements in knowledge and behaviour. The survey focuses on knowledge pertaining to the speed and spread of fire, and the responses which are perceived to be required in a fire emergency. Important topics such as fire safety equipment in households, general precautionary fire safe behaviours, awareness of fire hazards and fire hazard messages away from the home, and overall levels of commitment to fire safety, are also included in the survey. The Fire Service ultimately seeks to reduce the incidence and consequences of fire in New Zealand.

Since 1998 TNS New Zealand has undertaken research on behalf of The New Zealand Fire Service. In December 2014 the research was moved from telephone to online survey methodology.
