The Ministry of Social Development commissioned the 2008 Living Standards Survey in order to monitor and develop a comprehensive understanding of the material well-being of New Zealand residents. The survey uses non-monetary indicators of material well-being, and complements the research based on household incomes. The survey contributes research to the Working for Families evaluation, and helps to improve and expand the technology available for tracking and better understanding trends in poverty and material hardship. Data collected from the survey will also contribute to the development of a suite of deprivation indices reflecting different dimensions of deprivation, and create opportunities to conduct international comparisons of material well-being.
