The Ministry of Health commissioned the 2009 New Zealand Oral Health Survey (NZOHS) to gather up-to-date information about the oral health of New Zealand residents (adults and children), and the oral health services they use. NZOHS collected information on New Zealand residents’ oral health that is not available by other means, such as analysis of health system records. As such, it is one of the best sources of information on the current oral health status of the New Zealand population. The survey consisted of face-to-face interviews and dental examinations, and was carried out from February to December 2009 as a follow-up to the 2006/07 New Zealand Health Survey (NZHS). NZOHS is also the first nationwide survey that has collected information on the oral health of New Zealand children aged two years and over.

Note: A total of 4,906 New Zealanders participated in the 2009 NZOHS, and 3,196 participants had a dental examination. Dental examination response rates: Adult 84%, Children 80%.
