The Ministry of Justice is evaluating the impacts of the reforms to the legal aid system that have been progressively implemented since 2009. The evaluation has been designed to provide regular feedback about the changes to the legal aid system, as well as monitoring the achievement of the intended outcomes of the reforms. In October – November 2011 the Ministry undertook its first online survey of legal aid lawyers in relation to the implementation of the legal aid reforms. The overall purpose of the Legal Aid Providers Survey is to measure attitudes towards specific changes being made to the legal aid system, and to understand how the changes are impacting on providers of legal aid. Whilst some of the questions are relevant to the time of the survey, other questions have been developed to be asked at regular intervals so that changes in attitudes and progress can be monitored over time. The survey also provides an initial benchmark against which future surveys can be compared.
