The New Zealand Household Travel Survey gathers information about daily personal travel in New Zealand. Survey participants throughout New Zealand are asked to report how, when, and where, they travel, during a specific two-day period. The survey results will facilitate monitoring of any changes in household travel and road safety risk. The first Household Travel Survey was carried out by the Ministry of Transport during 1989/90, and included nearly 9,000 people. The same core questionnaire and methodology have been used with each subsequent survey in order for the results to be compared over the last two decades. The survey is continuous, in order to provide up-to-date travel data and travel trends over time. The information will help transport planners understand how transport systems are working and to prepare for the future. It will also help to improve road safety.
In early 2014, the Ministry carried out a three month trial to see whether using online methods and GPS is more accurate, user-friendly and cost-effective when surveying New Zealanders’ day-to-day travel. A decision will be made on the future of the survey after results from the pilot have been examined. This means there will be a gap in data collection from when the survey ends in its current form and when it continues in any new form.
From October 2015, the Ministry is continuously surveying people using GPS units and online forms.
